Do Ari Dear Only You Dont Know
Read To: Chapter 42 (Current latest scanlation)
TL;DR Impression: In this slice of life drama, multiple independent but interconnected characters star in a story that focuses on overcoming your weaknesses as you lot pursue dear and happiness!
Genre/Elements: Josei, Slice of Life, Drama, Really silly plotlines
The Basics:
"Honey, Only You lot Don't Know" is a Korean webcomic nigh unrelated only interconnected girls and women that go to great lengths to hide things about themselves. Its a story that goes from character to character, using humor and drama to tell stories that are all likewise relatable. Different most shoujo manga, the guys and girls in these stories are mostly ordinary people with ordinary hopes, dreams and flaws. There are no big tragic back stories or high school hi-jinks here, simply funny and heartwarming little tales that slowly prove us more and more of the trials and tribulations of this group of girls.
Our cast of characters includes:
- Jin Hui ("Hide Your True Self" chapters) a young housewife who is hiding the fact that she'south the de facto leader of a crime syndicate from her ordinary husband.
- Ari ("Hide Your True Feelings" chapters) a woman in her early twenties who tries her best to non fall in love but can't help doing so (and getting burned from information technology).
- Na Young ("Hide Your True Face" chapters) a young woman who runs a makeup salon whose truthful appearance leaves a lot to be desired. She hides behind her makeup and tin't open to the person that loves her.
- Madam Mi ("Hide Your By" chapters) a immature woman who works equally a hostess in an elegant bar. Her capacity involve trying to prove to someone from her past that her task is fundamentally chaste and uplifting.
- Soo Jin ("Hide Your True Age" chapters) a mature looking center schooler that has fallen for a middle aged homo. She tries her best to pretend to be older than she is (and fails miserably).
- Chae Rae Shin ("Hibernate Your Hobby" chapters) another center schooler and a die-difficult fujoshi.
Each of the characters, except maybe Chae Rae Shin, obsess completely over their subconscious aspect. Their life becomes defended to it in one way or another, either maintaining an illusion or dwelling excessively upon it. Nevertheless, they slowly move frontward in their relationships and overcome the challenges that stand in their way.
My Impressions:
I had a lot of fun reading Dear, Only You Don't Know! Information technology blends humor with relatable issues and then well its uncanny. I plant myself giggling over Jin Hui'due south night and day personality shifts and Soo Jin's antics. While at the same fourth dimension feeling aching over Na Young's dilemma and feeling intrigued by Madam Mi's mysterious goals. Each of the main characters has a very distinct flavor to her story, and the fact that the webcomic rotates through the characters means that you never get bored of too much of the same matter. I was ever eagerly reading through to encounter what each character would do next.
I could write quite a lot nearly the humor, merely I recall the virtually important bit is that its very varied. There's time for dry chuckles, there's plenty of silly gags (meet the pic above), some slapstick and situational sense of humor, and bits that manage to be sorry and funny at the aforementioned time. The women and girls tend to take dissimilar styles to their stories, and so the sense of humor gets to be different likewise.
Jin Hui's story is probably the well-nigh straightforward and the one that focuses on jokes the most. You don't get a huge amount of focus on her beyond the fact that she's a huge badass with a soft side to her. And somehow that's OK. She frequently shows up in the other plotlines to bring the trounce downward or settle a tense situation (ordinarily with intimidation). She's a fun character that doesn't seem to take enough depth to explore in comparison to the others.
Ari'south story is a fleck of an unusual one for me. I think when I was younger I did not obsess as hard over love similar she did, so I detect it tough to empathise with her goal of not falling in love. Even with that said, her stories tend to entertain pretty well. The growing relationship with her coworker Seo Jin is incredibly beautiful to watch develop, even though she tries to fight against it. Add on top of that her height complex, grapheme quirks and her no-nonsense attitude and you accept a spunky and fun grapheme to read about. I am eagerly awaiting to see what happens with her and Seo Jin in upcoming chapters. They seem like the kind of couple that would accept fun-every bit-heck interactions fifty-fifty later on they start dating.
Na Young is probably my favorite character of all of them. She but has such an amazingly stiff and commanding personality while hiding such crippling anxiety. While she can practise "magic" for everyone else with her brand up, she can't remove her own disguise for fear of scaring off the person she loves most. Its such a tense situation and even now I don't feel like there'due south a correct answer for her. Her chapters often have me wincing and hoping everything turns out OK once she finally makes the plunge. The backstory to the band she helped become popular was bully besides!
Madam Mi serves as a chip of an intermission to the often hectic stories that the other characters have. Her capacity are often lower cardinal and more contemplative, focusing on how people interpret appearances. While Madam Mi herself is a very stable and mysterious character that actually isn't besides interesting, the troublemaking boy from her past totally makes up for it. He's stubborn and difficult to convince, and watching him slowly change his heed about Madam Mi and her job was incredibly satisfying. That said, I'm looking forward to finding out more about Mi and her past. After all, she has to exist hiding something :>
Soo Jin'due south chapters tend to be actually dizzy. Her efforts to entreatment to the center aged dude she's chasing after are poorly idea out and childish. She'due south kind of a brat, so it'll exist interesting to run into if she grows up in the coming chapters. Even now she seems to exist getting less self centered and more interested in other people, but she still has a long style to go.
Chae Rae Shin's graphic symbol seems to just exist there as a straight human being to Soo Jin's antics. Her hobby rarely comes up and when it does its not dealt with seriously. For that reason she's probably my least favorite principal graphic symbol. There simply isn't annihilation to her. I think the story would take been improved if they either fabricated her patently a side character or gave more meat to her chapters.
Before I end upwards hither, I merely want to requite a big thumbs up to the fine art for this comic. I really enjoyed the varied character designs and the ability to make very different looking male and female characters. I come across a lot of girl's manga fall into this trap where so many of the male characters wait very similar. The art is articulate and expressive, plus it has the wonderful bonus of being in color!
Terminal Thoughts:
I'll definitely be following this webcomic as the translations come out. There are so many plots going at one time that there's always something to promise for and look forrard to. What I really love most about this webcomic is how the plots interconnect so effortlessly. For example, the adult female that comes to Madam Mi'southward bar confesses to the troublemaker from Mi's past, but only afterwards getting a heave of confidence from Na Immature's brand up skills. In plow this affects both the troublemaker and Na Young, who builds up more than resolve to also confess to the person she loves. That connection happened and then effortlessly and naturally that it was amazing to read. I hope to come across many more like it in the future.
